The Ohio Connection
- Born in Camden, Ohio, on September 13, 1876, and spent his formative years in Clyde—upon which he would later base
his novel, Winesburg, Ohio.
- In 1900, He attended Wittenberg Academy (now Wittenberg University) in Springfield, Ohio.
- In 1904, Anderson moved to Elyria. Ultimately, Anderson lived in Ohio about half of his life.
- In 1904, he married Cornelia Lane of Toledo, Ohio.
- At various points in his life, he worked as a warehouse laborer, as an advertising copywriter, as the president of two companies, and in the mail-order paint business.
- In 1912, Anderson experienced a psychological breakdown in Elyria, Ohio.
- On November 28, 1912, Anderson “left business for literature,” walking out of his office as president of the Anderson Manufacturing Company in Elyria, Ohio.
- In 1919, Anderson rewrote several short stories and collected them as Winesburg, Ohio.
