1958 – Crazy in Berlin assigned as reading in college courses of Contemporary American Literature and in courses in Creative Writing
1962 – Dial fellowship for outstanding work in progress on Little Big Man
1965 – Western Heritage Award, and Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Award, National Institute of Arts and Letters, both for Little Big Man
1982 – Ohioana Book Award for Reinhart's Women
1984 – Pulitzer Prize nomination for The Feud
1986 – Litt.D., Long Island University

The mission of the Ohioana Library Association is to recognize and encourage the creative accomplishments of Ohioans, to preserve and to expand a permanent archive of books, sheet music, manuscripts, and other materials by Ohioans and about Ohio, and to disseminate information about the work of Ohio writers, musicians, and other artists to researchers, schools, and the general public.
