Joan Chase Ohioana Authors

Born in Wooster, Ohio, Joan Chase moved from town to town in Ohio throughout her childhood. It was shortly after the Great Depression, and the family had to go wherever Joan’s father could find work, stopping in Cincinnati, Columbus, Tiffin and Danville. As a young girl, Joan loved to visit her Ohioan relatives on their farms, and this may have led her to base her first and most highly regarded book, During the Reign of the Queen of Persia, on an Ohio farm. Chase came to writing later in her life than most, and she did not originally approach writing as a career. Her first book’s success, popularity, and numerous awards might be partly to blame for the six-year lapse before publication of her second novel.
