The Ohio Connection

• Harold Hart Crane was born in Garrettsville, Ohio in 1899.
• In 1903, Clarence, Grace, and Hart Crane moved to Warren, Ohio.
• In 1908, Crane was sent to live with his grandparents in Cleveland. While there he attended East High School, but he failed to graduate. He left for New York City in 1916.
• Hart returned to Cleveland from New York in 1918 to be with his mother while his father remarried. He worked for a time as a reported for the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
• Crane worked for his father’s company in 1919 and remained in the Cleveland area until 1923.
• Crane completed the “The Marriage of Faustus and Helen” in Ohio and in a night of drunken inspiration, developed the idea for The Bridge.
• Late in 1929, Hart returned to Ohio to live with his father in Chagrin Falls. There he applied for, and received, the Guggenheim Fellowship which would send him to Mexico.
