“If you are born on the wrong side of the tracks, you can walk through the door of a library and you are no longer on the wrong side of the tracks.” —Wil Haygood
Even as he traveled the globe as a foreign correspondent, Wil Haygood couldn’t stop thinking about his upbringing on Mount Vernon Avenue in Columbus.
Now 51 and living in Washington DC, Haygood was a teenager when he left the eastside housing projects. He went to college and rose to become an acclaimed feature writer with the Boston Globe, and later with the Washington Post.
His books include Two on the River, which chronicles a 2,000 mile journey down the Mississippi, Kingof the Cats: The Life and Times of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., and In Black and White: The Life of Sammy Davis Jr. But Haygood is best known for his 1997 biography, The Haygoods of Columbus: A Family Memoir.
