No one seems to enjoy the holidays quite as freely and enthusiastically as children. During the holiday season, when families traditionally gather together, children’s books tend to appear – whether young fingers grip their pages, or they’re retrieved with nostalgia from the shelf to which they long ago retired. Three Ohio authors and illustrators have distinguished themselves with humorous and touching Thanksgiving books for children.
Ronald Himler’s picture book, A Thanksgiving Turkey, contains watercolor illustrations and a gently told story about the narrator’s youth. A 13-year old boy’s grandfather, determined to pass down an old family tradition, takes the boy turkey hunting for Thanksgiving. But when they finally find the right bird, they’re not sure they want to kill it after all.
David Catrow’s Over the River and Through the Woods is an uproarious spoof on the traditional holiday song. Catrow depicts New Yorkers driving a minivan through holiday traffic on their way to grandfather's house, in hilarious, colorful, outlandish illustrations.
Michael J. Rosen’s A Thanksgiving Wish is a picture book about a family’s first Thanksgiving after their beloved grandmother, Bubbe, dies. The story celebrates the idea that traditions keep loved ones with us even after they are gone.
Whether or not children are present at this year’s Thanksgiving feast, these children’s books speak of memories, experiences, and laughter that touch us all.
