Lois McMaster Bujold
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Lois McMaster Bujold graduated from Upper Arlington High School and attended The Ohio State University. A voracious reader in her childhood, Lois also devoured the old science fiction magazines and paperbacks her father passed down to her after reading them on business trips. She began writing her own stories by the time she reached the eighth grade.
Bujold is best known for her science fiction series centered upon the character of Miles Vorkosigan, a brilliant military leader with physical disabilities, who lives in a world that values physical perfection. Bujold comments that “Everybody harbors some ‘cripplement,’ emotional if not physical. There is scarcely a more universal appeal to the reader. You can’t judge anybody—you never know what back-breaking secret burdens they may be carrying.”
