Artist and Cleveland native Ronald Himler has illustrated more than 150 children’s books. He is well-known for his ability to express complex emotional messages through his painting. The award-winning picture books The Wall, and Fly Away Home, were illustrated by Himler and written by Eve Bunting.
More recently, Himler’s soft watercolors fill the pages of A Thanksgiving Turkey, released in 2001 for children ages four to eight. The nostalgic picture book tells the story of a thirteen-year-old boy whose mother uproots the family to live with and care for her aging father. They move to granddad’s farm and try to adapt to life in rural Virginia. As Thanksgiving approaches, the old timer takes his grandson out hunting for a wild turkey. But when they come face-to-face with their prey, the grandfather cannot bring himself to shoot it.
